ECOGIG graduate student Cathrine Shepard recently defended her Master's thesis, titled "Nutrient Availability Modulates the Effects of Corexit 9500A on Oil Biodegradation." She looked at the impacts of Corexit 9500A addition on naturally occurring microbial communities and their ability to degrade oil in the Gulf of Mexico at several locations, including natural oil seeps, near the Deepwater Horizon accident and near an ongoing oil spill site (Taylor Energy).
