Girl Scouts and Brownies from the Oconee County Girl Scout Service Chapter, located in Watkinsville, GA, learned about the Gulf of Mexico and marine deep sea habitats, thanks to a visit from Dr. Samantha Joye (University of Georgia) and ECOGIG outreach staff during their "Water, Water Everywhere" day camp on June 23rd, 2015.
Approximately 50 Girl Scouts and Brownies attended the camp- the girls learned about deep sea ecosystems and how scientists explore and sample that environment using ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles). Then the girls were able to drive a model ROV in a pool to get an idea of what it feels like to drive an ROV under the water like scientists do in order to explore environments not easily accessible to humans. It was a great experience for everyone who attended the camp and everyone (even ECOGIG) earned their badge!!
