In the latest edition of ECOMagazine 2020, ECOGIG director Dr. Mandy Joye was chosen as a Deep-Sea Hero in the Extreme Life & Ecosystems category! The editors of the magazine asked the research community to nominate Deep-Sea Heroes - people they felt were making significant contributions to deep-sea research, policy and exploration. Ten individuals made the shortlist, in 4 categories - Extreme Life & Ecosystems, Deep Sea Observations, Innovation for the Depths and Humans in the Deep.

Dr. Joye studies the complex interplay between microbes and large-scale ecological processes in the ocean. Her interdisciplinary work explores the deep ocean and the impact of biogeochemical, ecological and environmental factors on microbes and other marine life. She has pioneered new methods of quantifying environmental factors such as microbial metabolisms and geochemical signatures in extreme conditions by visiting the deepest parts of the ocean in manned submersibles and remotely operated vehicles.

Congratulations to all of the nominees - you are all truly deep-sea hereos!
