Dr. Baums develops and applies molecular tools to understand the influence of environment, mating patterns, population structure and biogeography on the survival and evolution of corals. Using neutral genetic markers (microsatellites) she studies gene flow and connectivity in deep and shallow corals and their symbionts. To study functional variation in response to environmental stressors, she conducts microarray gene expression experiments on corals. Dr. Baums’ group just completed a high quality transcritpome of the threatened reef-building coral Acropora palmata (Polato et al., subm.)
