Dr. Teske is an expert on molecular microbial systematics and community structure in marine environments. His group is working extensively on microbial community structure in hydrocarbon seep microbial ecosystems in the Gulf of California and in the Gulf of Mexico, using functional genes, rRNA genes, pyrosequencing and FISH. He started working on the microbial impact of the Macondo oil spill when the first research cruise visited the wellhead area in May 2010.
