Dr. Arnosti is a marine organic chemist who studies the relationship between organic matter structure and rates and means of carbon cycling by microbial communities. Recent work has focused on the effects of aggregate formation and aging on carbon degradation by microbial communities, including communities affected by Macondo oil. A second major focal point is on the functional differences between seawater and sedimentary microbial communities, and relationships between microbial community function and composition.
